Abstract

The rapid development of digital media has given rise to the phenomenon of short video culture, characterized by the dominance of short-form video platforms such as TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. This phenomenon has transformed patterns of information consumption and influenced how younger generations acquire knowledge, including religious knowledge. Although previous studies have examined TikTok as a learning medium and a platform for Islamic preaching, limited research has specifically investigated short video culture as a digital cultural phenomenon and its implications for Islamic Religious Education (IRE). This study aims to analyze the characteristics of short video culture, identify its implications for Islamic Religious Education, and formulate strategies for reconstructing IRE learning practices in accordance with the characteristics of digital-native learners. This research employs a library research method with a qualitative descriptive approach through the analysis of 14 core scholarly articles and relevant books and academic documents published between 2021 and 2026. The findings indicate that short video culture provides opportunities such as increased learning accessibility, enhanced student engagement, and broader spaces for digital Islamic outreach. However, it also poses challenges including reduced attention spans, oversimplification of religious understanding, crises of scholarly authority, and growing dependence on platform algorithms. Theoretically, this study positions short video culture as a cultural factor influencing the epistemological transformation of Islamic education, contextualized within the Merdeka Curriculum and the Pancasila Student Profile. Therefore, the reconstruction of IRE should adapt to technology while preserving the depth of students’ religious understanding.
