Abstract
The Qur'an places education as the main foundation in the formation of a faithful, knowledgeable, and civilized human being. Surah Al-'Alaq verses 1-5 is the first revelation that explicitly emphasizes the urgency of education through the command to read, study, and develop knowledge. This study aims to examine the concept of Islamic education contained in Surah Al-'Alaq verses 1-5 using an analytical study of the interpretations of Jalaluddin Al-Mahalli and Jalaluddin Al-Suyuti in Tafsir Al-Jalalain. The research method used is a literature review (library research) with a qualitative-descriptive approach, as well as thematic interpretation analysis of these verses.
The results of the study show that the concept of Islamic education in Surah Al-‘Alaq verses 1–5 includes several fundamental principles, namely: first, monotheism-based education that emphasizes the relationship between the learning process and divine awareness; second, the importance of literacy and intellectual activity as an entry point for the development of knowledge; third, recognition of human potential as a creature that can learn and be taught, as emphasized through the concept of ta‘līm through the medium of the qalam; and fourth, education as a continuous process that elevates human dignity from ignorance to knowledge. Tafsir Al-Jalalain presents a concise yet substantial explanation, emphasizing the meaning of the command to read, the role of Allah as a source of knowledge, and the pedagogical dimension of the first revelation.
Thus, Surah Al-'Alaq, verses 1–5, as understood through the Tafsir Al-Jalalain, provides a normative and philosophical foundation for integrative Islamic education, combining spiritual, intellectual, and moral aspects. This finding reinforces the view that education in Islam is not merely the transfer of knowledge, but rather an effort to develop whole individuals oriented toward devotion to God and the welfare of the community.
